Keynote Speaker - Prof. michael Byram

Michael Byram is Professor Emeritus at the University of Durham (UK) and a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences He ‘read’ Modern and Medieval Languages at King’s College, University of  Cambridge (UK), completed a PhD in Danish literature, and then taught French and German in secondary and adult education. He has been at Durham University since 1980 engaged in teacher training, research student supervision and research on languages and education. After retirement from Durham, he was Visiting Professor at the University of Luxembourg where he still teaches on a master’s course. He is currently Guest Research Professor, Sofia University St Kliment Ohridski, where he is involved in a comparative study of the assessment of the PhD in a dozen universities across the world.

Professor (Teaching) Emerita, Graduate School of Education, Stanford University. Professor Lotan served as Director of the Stanford Teacher Education Program (STEP) Secondary between 1999-2014. Currently, she directs the Program for Complex Instruction, and serves as Director of Pedagogy and Strategic Planning for Programa de Especialização Docente (PED Brasil), Lemann Center, Stanford University. Professor Lotan’s research focuses on teaching and learning in heterogeneous classrooms, teacher education, and the social organization of classrooms and schools.

Invited Speaker - Dr. Armando Loera-Varela

Armando Loera-Varela is a Mexican independent education researcher and evaluator. He has a master’s degree and doctoral studies at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He has directed 19 research or evaluation studies in 17 countries from Latin America and the Caribee. Among the intercultural education projects that he has produced are the following: designing the field research for formulating Basic education policies and teaching material for the Raramuli and O’dame, two of the native peoples in the state of Chihuahua; designer and academic coordinator of a course about Social Policies Management for indigenous leaders from 28 Native peoples from Latin America, at Inter-American Social Development Institute in Washington, D.C.; designer of educational standards for the Indigenous Basic Education Schools and Teachers, for the Secretariat of Public Education of Mexico.

Africa), Meiji University (Japan), Shanghai International Studies University (China) and adjunct faculty at North Carolina State University. She is on the faculty of Harvard University’s Global Education Think.

Dr. Lucy Effeh Attom holds PhD, M. Phil and B.Ed in Social Studies from the University of Education, Winneba. She is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Social Studies Education of the University of Education, Winneba. Currently, Dr. Attom is the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences Education after being the Head of Department for three years. Her working experience as an educator started in 1998 after completing Our Lady of Grace (OLA)Teacher Training College, Cape Coast. She is the chairperson of Bebo Foundation, Ghana and Consultant to Bebo Bakery of Holland.

Invited Speaker - Dr. Mai Nguyen-Phuong-Mai

Neuroscience and Change strategies: In the world of VUCA, intercultural learning involves a direct challenge of how to change and adapt successfully. This keynote lecture uses neuroscience to first explain why change is so challenging. Next, it will introduce a framework based on research evidence from a wide array of studies, especially from brain science. This framework provides concrete strategies that can support individuals and organizations to face the challenges of cultural adaptation and creation. The underlining message of this lecture is, we may find it difficult to change, but we are built to adapt, and we are the only the species that can do so deliberately.

Dr. Njoroge has 19 years of professional teaching experience, with 11 years of service in professional development of teachers and 8 years in teaching chemistry and mathematics in secondary schools. He holds a PhD in Teaching and Curriculum from Syracuse University, USA. Dr. Njoroge has a Master of Education in Teacher Education (Mathematics & Science Education) from Aga Khan University, a Master of Education (Guidance & Counseling) and Bachelor of Education Science (Mathematics & Chemistry) both from Kenyatta University. His other professional qualifications include Certification in University Teaching (the Future Professorate Programme, Syracuse University) and ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System Lead Auditor (by the National Quality Institute of the Kenya Bureau of Standards). Currently, he is a National Trainer in teacher professional development and a Deputy Coordinator of Research and Development Department at CEMASTEA. He serves as an adjunct faculty in the Department of Education, University of Embu, Kenya.

Invited Speaker - Prof. Randa Khair Abbas

Prof. Randa Khair Abbas is Academic Head of the Arab Academic College. She was the first Druze Israeli woman to gain a PhD from Bar-Ilan University and the the first Druze Israeli women to have the admission to the degree of Professor from the Council for Higher Education in Israel. She is a researcher and one of her area of research has included Multi-Cultural Education, Educational leadership, Generational gaps in traditional societies, Perception of female leadership in relation to society and culture, Perception of identity and language in relation to the culture. She works in women’s rights and the advancement of Arab women in the professional landscape.
